This course is designed to provide an initial introduction and a review of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) regulations as related to the specific functions performed by Radiological Control Technicians to ensure the safe transportation and disposal of radioactive materials. The general awareness & function-specific training includes detailed information relating to the definitions, calculations and requirements for the shipment of radioactive materials in accordance with DOT’s 49 CFR, and acceptance criteria for radioactive commercial disposal sites per NRC’s IE Notice 79-19. Practical exercises are utilized that allow participants to apply the concepts of the training as it is being discussed. Regulations and materials will be provided to facilitate completing the course during 8 hours in the classroom and 2+ hours completing the written exam.
This course is especially effective as either an introduction for new or inexperienced radiological controls shipping personnel, or as a thorough review for experienced radiological controls personnel who desire refresher training to satisfy their Nuclear Regulatory Commission IE Bulletin 79-19 guidance for periodic retraining and their DOT HazMat Employee training. Suggested attendees include Radioactive Waste Technicians and Supervisors; and Health Physicists and Technicians who are responsible to support shippers of radioactive material or waste shipments.
Successful participants receive a certification stating that the training meets the requirements of 49 CFR 172 Subpart H and NRC IE Notice 79-19. Successful completion is achieved with a passing score of 80% or better on a written exam.
Course Topics include: Radioactive Material & Waste Types; Shipping Descriptions; Radioactive Material or Waste Packages for Transportation and Disposal; Markings, Labels, Placards , Shipping Papers and Emergency Response; Waste Generator Responsibilities; Waste Classification and Manifesting; Radiation & Contamination Shipping Surveys and Limits; Operating Experience/Lessons Learned; Transportation Security; and Written Exam.
